COVID Jab Recommended for Vulnerable Tots

The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) has advised that children aged 6 months to 4 years with underlying medical conditions should be offered the COVID-19 vaccine. While most young kids face low risk from the virus, those with health issues are over seven times more likely to require intensive care.

UK Follows US Lead After Safety Green Light

More than a million young children in the US have already received the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, showing side effects similar to other childhood vaccines—think irritability, sleepiness, and mild fever. The UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) gave the green light for use in this age group back in December 2022.

NHS England to Roll Out from Mid-June

UK health chiefs say eligible tots will be offered two doses of the vaccine, spaced 8 to 12 weeks apart. NHS England plans to start vaccinating from mid-June, but parents should hold tight until contacted.

Experts Urge Parents to Get Kids Protected

Professor Wei Shen Lim, JCVI Chair, said: “For most infants, COVID-19 causes mild or no symptoms. But for a small group with pre-existing conditions, the virus can lead to serious illness. Vaccination offers the best protection for these vulnerable children.”

Dr Mary Ramsay, UKHSA Immunisation Head, added: “COVID-19 is still circulating with thousands of cases weekly. Extra vaccine protection is vital for young children in clinical risk groups. The virus isn’t going away, so I urge parents to get their eligible kids vaccinated when contacted by health professionals.”
