£30m Medtech Boost to Slash NHS Winter Waits
The UK government has dropped a hefty £30 million investment into cutting-edge medtech to ease the NHS chaos this winter. The funding targets faster cancer tests using 3D scanning and slick new tech like delivery drones to tackle NHS backlogs head-on.
England’s Regions Gear Up for Tech Upgrade
Every English region can now bid for a slice of the cash through their local Integrated Care Systems (ICSs). The goal? Slash waiting lists, speed up diagnoses, and roll out game-changing treatments that get patients seen and treated quicker.
Virtual Wards and Wearable Tech Set to Explode
- ICSs can pump money into virtual wards, letting more patients stay home while freeing hospital beds. Over 9,800 virtual ward spots are already live, aiming for 10,000 soon.
- Wearable devices that monitor blood oxygen, heartbeat, and blood pressure could become the new normal, helping manage chronic illnesses from the comfort of home.
- Boosts in 3D imaging and digital diagnostics will sharpen early cancer detection and speed up treatment plans.
Top Health Officials Back the Move
Health Secretary Steve Barclay said, “Giving clinicians access to the latest technology saves time, delivers top-quality care, and cuts down waiting lists.”
NHS transformation chief Dr Vin Diwakar added, “This extra funding will fast-track innovations that ease pressure across the NHS and improve patient care.”
How to Get the Funds?
Local NHS areas and ICSs can now pitch their bids to the Department of Health and Social Care and NHS England to unlock the cash and bring new tech to their services.
Earlier this year, the government unveiled a medtech strategy to make sure patients get access to safe, innovative tools via the NHS. They also backed an additional £21 million for AI diagnostics, aiming to speed diagnoses for cancer, stroke, and heart conditions through smart imaging and decision support.
