Bird Flu Sparks Mass Cull of 27,000 Chickens
A commercial farm is set to cull all 27,000 chickens after confirmed cases of H5 bird flu struck the flock, officials revealed. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) confirmed the presence of the H5 strain, prompting immediate action.
Exclusion Zone in Place to Stop Spread
A 1km (0.6 mile) exclusion zone has been established around the farm to contain the outbreak and prevent the virus from spreading further. Authorities are investigating the source while urging bird keepers to stay vigilant.
Public Health Risk ‘Very Low’ – Experts Say Cook Poultry Properly
Dr Gavin Dabrera from Public Health England reassured the public that the risk to human health remains very low. “Avian flu (often called bird flu) is primarily a disease of birds,” he stressed.
“As a precaution, we are offering public health advice and anti-virals to those who had contact with the affected birds, as is standard practice.”
The Food Standards Agency added there is no food safety risk, provided all poultry products, including eggs, are cooked thoroughly.
Biosecurity Urged as Officials Hunt Virus Source
Chief Veterinary Officer Christine Middlemiss warned bird owners to be alert for any signs of illness. “Report suspected disease immediately and ensure you are maintaining strong biosecurity on your premises,” she urged.
Experts are racing to control and eliminate the outbreak of the low pathogenic avian flu strain before it can spread further.
