Hero businessman and two firefighters die in Bicester Motion blaze

Brave Dave Chester Dies Saving Others

A local businessman, Dave Chester, 57, ran into a burning hangar to help emergency crews during a massive fire at Bicester Motion, a former RAF base in Oxfordshire. He was one of three victims who tragically lost their lives in the devastating blaze on Thursday evening.

Dave was remembered as a true local hero and pillar of the Bicester community. His family released a touching tribute:

“Dave was always the man you went to when you needed help. That’s exactly what happened Thursday evening — he saw firefighters needing assistance and helped without hesitation. He wasn’t a victim — he was a hero.”

A lifelong Bicester resident, Dave built a successful business with the support of family and friends and was deeply involved in the local scene.

Two Firefighters Killed Battling Inferno

The fire also claimed the lives of two brave firefighters from the Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service:

  • Jennie Logan, 30, who joined the service in 2023 and was a beloved member of Bicester Vixens Rugby Club.
  • Martyn Sadler, 38, who served with Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue and previously with London Fire Brigade, and was a long-time member of Bicester RUFC.

A fundraising campaign for their families and The Fire Fighters Charity has already raised over £8,000 as the community rallies round.

Firefighters formed a solemn guard of honour outside Bicester Fire Station, while floral tributes, heartfelt messages, and children’s drawings have appeared across the village.

Massive Fire Sparks Multiple Explosions

At the peak of the blaze, ten fire engines battled the spreading flames. Witnesses reported multiple explosions and huge plumes of thick black smoke visible from miles away, even as far as Oxford.

Local resident Shane Jones revealed the building contained gas cylinders and piles of tyres, which may have fuelled the fire’s ferocity.

Thames Valley Police have launched an unexplained death investigation, though no foul play is suspected so far.

Nation Mourns Fallen Heroes

Chief Fire Officer Rob MacDougall, holding back tears, confirmed the tragic losses:

“It is with a heavy heart that we report the loss of two of our firefighters. A member of the public has also sadly died. Our thoughts are with the families, friends, and colleagues affected.”

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer tweeted:

“Devastating news. The bravery of our firefighters is astounding. My thoughts are with their families and friends.”

Local MP Calum Miller called the tragedy “devastating” and promised the community would ensure a lasting tribute to the three who lost their lives.
