London Fire Brigade’s First Female Chief Dany Cotton to Retire After 32 Years

Dany Cotton Announces Retirement After Trailblazing Career

Dany Cotton, the London Fire Brigade’s first-ever woman Commissioner, is set to retire in April 2020 after an impressive 32 years of service. Cotton informed Mayor Sadiq Khan and Deputy Mayor for Fire and Resilience Fiona Twycross of her decision, reflecting on her career spanning thrilling projects and tragic moments.

“I have worked with the best people in the world on some of the most exciting projects, and also some of the most painful incidents to have occurred in London Fire Brigade’s history,” Cotton said.

Remembering Grenfell: A Heartbreaking Chapter

Cotton spoke about the lasting impact of the Grenfell Tower fire, a tragedy that shook London and the entire nation. “The utter devastation of the Grenfell Tower fire and its impact on so many people will never leave me,” she declared.

She promised to stay committed to leading the Brigade through the ongoing Public Inquiry phases, ensuring full support for victims and staff.

Breaking Barriers for Women in Firefighting

Starting out as one of the few women in the Brigade, Cotton’s career mirrored the changing face of London’s Fire Service. “It was a very different organisation with very different attitudes back then,” she said. “I hope my work has helped redefine firefighting as a professional career open to both women and men.”

Tributes Pour In from London’s Leadership

Mayor Sadiq Khan praised Cotton’s courage and dedication, saying: “Dany has led the London Fire Brigade through an unprecedented period of major incidents, including the awful Grenfell Tower tragedy. She is a truly exceptional firefighter and a role model who has broken down barriers for women in London.”

He added, “I’m sure all Londoners would like to thank her for everything she has done to keep our city safe and wish her the very best in retirement.”

Deputy Mayor Fiona Twycross echoed the admiration: “It has been a privilege to work closely with Dany. She has shown heroism, determination, and bravery when Londoners needed it the most.”
