A man has been arrested after a fatal two-car collision near Bath which prompted the response of four emergency helicopters.
Emergency services were called to the A46 Gloucester Road, just north of Upper Swainswick, shortly after 3pm on Saturday, 11 July, following a serious collision involving a white Dacia and a black Range Rover.
The driver of the Dacia suffered life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to the Major Trauma Centre at Southmead Hospital, where he later died.
Avon and Somerset Police said the victim’s family are being supported by a specially trained family liaison officer.
Woman and child remain in hospital
A woman and a child, who were travelling as passengers in the Dacia, were also injured in the collision.
Both remain in hospital, although their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
The emergency response included Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance, Devon Air Ambulance, an HM Coastguard helicopter, and a National Police Air Service (NPAS) helicopter.
Driver arrested after leaving scene
Police said the Range Rover failed to stop following the collision, prompting an urgent search.
A man in his 20s was arrested in Wiltshire several hours later on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
He has since been released on conditional bail while detectives continue their enquiries.
Appeal for witnesses and dashcam footage
An Avon and Somerset Police spokesperson said: “The road was closed while emergency services responded and to allow initial investigations to take place at the scene. It has since reopened.
“Anyone who witnessed the collision and has not yet spoken to an officer is urged to contact us.
“Officers are also keen to hear from anyone who has dashcam footage of a black Range Rover travelling westbound on the M4 or southbound on the A46 on the afternoon of Saturday 11 July.
