Simon Gebrengus, 44, was sentenced to six years in prison for manslaughter following the death of 33-year-old Berhane Tsegay in Aston last year. Berhane died on 29 September, three days after being found with serious head injuries on Lower Tower Street. West Midlands Police launched a Major Crime Unit investigation after ambulance staff called officers to a nightclub where Berhane was discovered.
Violent Dispute Unfolded
The investigation revealed a dispute escalated to violence, during which Berhane was pushed down a flight of stairs and hit his head. CCTV footage confirmed Gebrengus’s role in the assault. Berhane was rushed to the hospital but later died from his injuries.
Second Man To Face Trial
Alongside Gebrengus, Bibi Gilzgi, a man from birmingham/" title="Birmingham" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Birmingham, has admitted manslaughter but denies murder. Gilzgi is set to stand trial next year.
Police Evidence And Arrest
Detective Sergeant Robert Moir, leading the inquiry, said Gebrengus initially gave an inconsistent account that did not match the evidence. Police quickly established his involvement, which resulted in his arrest and charge.
Family Tribute To Victim
Berhane’s family described him as “kind, loving, gentle and humble”. They mourned his tragic loss, stating it has left a “devastating impact”. A deacon by faith both in Eritrea and the UK, Berhane had been pursuing a career in construction and had a promising future.
“Berhane had a bright future ahead of him, which has been taken away in the most tragic circumstances,” said the family. “His loss has left a permanent void in our family and community.”
