Shock in Godalming as Pensioner Mary Steele Murdered in Her Home
Neighbours in Godalming are reeling after Mary Steele, a beloved former junior school teacher in her 80s, was brutally murdered in her bungalow. Police have recovered a weapon from her home as they investigate the shocking killing.
Neighbours in Disbelief
“Mary has gone to Heaven now,” said one stunned neighbour. “We saw her in the garden just two days ago. I even offered to get some things for her in town.” Mary, who lived locally and leaves behind a son and daughter, was well-known and loved by the close-knit community.
Many are struggling to understand why anyone would harm such a kind figure.
Crime Scene Horror
Police remain at the scene in a quiet cul-de-sac in Wey Court, Farncombe. Officers in white forensic suits have been spotted entering the blood-soaked two-bedroom bungalow where the murder took place.
Sources reveal Mary was repeatedly stabbed with a knife. A man found wounded at the home was arrested and taken to hospital. It is believed he tried to take his own life after the attack.
Investigation Underway
Emergency services were called to the address around 9.20am on 29 October following concerns for safety. Mary was treated at the scene but sadly died at 10.10am.
Surrey Police confirmed the man remains in custody while inquiries continue. They urge anyone with information about the incident to come forward, quoting incident reference P17273057.
