Snow Warning Slaps London and Large Swathes of UK
The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for London and major cities as snow, ice, and gale-force winds slam the UK. Temperatures have already nosedived to a freezing -9.6C in the Scottish Highlands and -8.1C in Cumbria’s Shap village.
From midnight to midday Friday, London, Birmingham, Wales, and much of the South East face icy roads and travel chaos. Scotland remains in the grip of a brutal 42-hour snow and ice warning from New Year’s Day into January 2. Northern Ireland and north-east Scotland also brace for wintry storms.
Freezing New Year’s Eve for Fireworks Fans
New Year’s Eve celebrations will be frost-bitten affairs. Forecaster Simon Partridge warns: “It’ll be cold everywhere, with temperatures around 1-2C in London at midnight under mostly clear skies.”
Cardiff offers a slightly milder 2-3C with cloud cover. Meanwhile, Edinburgh’s Hogmanay revellers can expect gusty winds hitting 30mph along with showers and hail.
South West England might see some fog patches, but many areas will wake up to frost before winter sunshine breaks through. The Met Office has flagged freezing fog in parts of north-west England – a slippery danger for drivers.
Big Chill Set to Grip UK Into Early January
Winter isn’t letting up. Temperatures will plunge further into 2026, with up to 30cm of snow forecast over hills and high routes. Northern Britain faces gale-force northerly winds, snow, and ice warnings.
A harsh cold health alert covers northern England until January 5. The elderly and vulnerable are at higher risk. The UK Health Security Agency warns of “significant impacts” on health and social care, including rising deaths linked to the freezing conditions.
“Arctic air and strong northerly winds will bring cold or very cold conditions to all parts of the UK, with widespread severe frosts and snow for many,” said Met Office deputy chief forecaster Mark Sidaway.
