HMS Trent and RAF Jets Ramp Up NATO Muscle in Eastern Med
HMS Trent is currently stirring things up in the eastern Mediterranean, teaming up with Merlin helicopters and RAF P8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft in high-stakes NATO exercises. Not stopping there, the Type 45 destroyer HMS Diamond set off from Portsmouth yesterday to join the action.
UK Doubles Down in Estonia with Tanks and Troops
Meanwhile, Challenger 2 tanks and armoured vehicles from the Royal Welsh battlegroup have landed in Estonia, kicking off a major UK troop boost. Around 1,000 more troops and gear are on the way, doubling Britain’s presence where it leads NATO’s forward battlegroup.
RAF Typhoons Scramble Over NATO Airspace
RAF Typhoon jets have already nailed their first air policing missions, patrolling NATO skies over the eastern front from bases in Cyprus and the UK. Four extra Typhoons are now using RAF Akrotiri as a launchpad, with Voyager tankers topping them up mid-air as they keep an eagle eye over NATO allies in Poland and beyond.
Defence Secretary: UK Forces ‘A Credible Deterrent’ Against Russia
“Our armed forces are once again being called upon in the service of our Nation and I salute the bravery and sense of duty shared by all our personnel who have been deployed to support NATO,” said Defence Secretary Ben Wallace MP.
Wallace emphasised that the UK and its NATO allies are presenting a united front to thwart Russian aggression and protect member states’ sovereignty. On the diplomatic front, the Defence Secretary hosted a virtual summit with over 25 countries—including the US, Canada, and some non-NATO states—to coordinate military aid and humanitarian support to Ukraine, including ammo, anti-tank weapons, and logistics.
NATO leaders agreed unanimously on 25 January: “We will make all deployments necessary to ensure strong and credible deterrence and defence across the Alliance, now and in the future. Our measures are and remain preventive, proportionate and non-escalatory.”
