Rye Harbour RNLI Rescue Stranded Yacht and Sick Skipper in Race Against Tide
Quick Response Off Jurys Gap
At 6.45pm on Sunday, January 29, HM Coastguard called in Rye Harbour RNLI to help a 27ft yacht struggling off Jurys Gap. The crew jumped into action, launching the Atlantic 85 lifeboat by 6.58pm and heading swiftly downriver towards the stranded vessel.
Sick Skipper and Engine Trouble
Crew member Rob Jennings revealed the skipper was feeling unwell amid worsening conditions. “He was glad to see us,” Jennings said. He boarded the yacht to offer help and set up a tow, staying onboard to keep things steady while they made their way back.
Race Against the Tide
The yacht, named Dutch Courage, suffered a broken fan belt. With low tide looming, getting the yacht safely upriver was critical. Luckily, the crew managed to tow Dutch Courage into 1 Harbour, tie her up securely, and bring the skipper ashore for tea and biscuits to warm up.
Professional Teamwork Saves the Day
Deputy Launching Authority Neil Jolly praised the lifeboat crew’s swift, professional response. “They have trained hard over the last month and put everything into practice tonight,” he said. “The turnout of boat and shore crew was terrific, and the launch speed impressive. It’s great to see everyone working together to save lives at sea.”
