Heroic Paramedics Deliver Baby Just Minutes After 999 Call!
Early on Monday 11th January, Pilates instructor Louise Mackrill, 41, was jolted awake by intense contractions—nearly a week before her due date. Knowing time was against them, Louise and her husband Tim rang 999, fearing they’d never make it to the hospital in time.
Calm Under Pressure: 999 Call-Taker Guides Dad Through Birth
Tim praised the 999 operator, Roy Gray, for his calm and clear instructions during the phone call. “The 999 call-taker was absolutely brilliant and told me exactly what I needed to do to be fully prepared for the birth,” Tim said. “He calmed me down, so I was level-headed and ready to help my wife.”
Roy Gray said, “I am so proud of how they both handled themselves that morning, by staying calm and listening to my instructions in order to safely bring their baby into the world.”
War Veteran Paramedics Race to Delivery
The ambulance crew sent consisted of Paramedic Kirsty Large, Technician David Harley, and Student Paramedic Emily Copson from the University of Northampton. As they were just logging on to their shift, the call came through.
The team was in safe hands. Both Kirsty and David are military veterans—Kirsty served nine years in the Army, including Bosnia and Iraq, while David spent 33 years with the RAF Regiment.
Kirsty has delivered six babies since joining East Midlands Ambulance Service 2.5 years ago. “One of these seven babies was delivered right in the back of an ambulance,” she said. “My Army experience helps me handle pressure.”
Speedy Delivery in the Living Room
Arriving at the home, paramedics quickly donned PPE before entering. Tim and their 3-year-old son Harry welcomed them. Kirsty and her team provided reassurance, pain relief, and clear instructions to Louise.
“I acted as a human stirrup, holding Louise’s foot so she could push against my hand for resistance,” Kirsty explained.
Within minutes, baby Laurie made his grand entrance, greeted warmly by mum, dad, big brother Harry, and granny. The crew then wrapped Laurie warmly and prepared to transport mother and baby to hospital.
Student Paramedic Shines on First Birth
Emily Copson, on her first delivery, impressed the team. “Emily was right behind me the whole time, encouraging mum, providing gas and air, and offering water,” said Kirsty. “She was excited to learn and focused on what was best for Louise and Laurie.”
The team felt privileged to be part of such a special moment. Kirsty added, “Louise and Laurie were our first patients that day and made the entire shift amazing. We’re so grateful for the flowers, chocolates, and handmade card the family sent us.”
Welcoming baby Laurie was a team effort, and this paramedic crew won’t forget it anytime soon.
