Yarmouth Lifeboat Launches to Rescue Stranded Yacht

Yarmouth’s Severn class all-weather lifeboat, Eric and Susan Hiscock (Wanderer), was scrambled by HM Coastguard on Sunday, 8 May 2022 at 12.22pm. The mission? To rescue a 24ft yacht stuck fast on Warden Ledge.

Yacht Runs Aground Despite Calm Conditions

The volunteer crew from Yarmouth RNLI steamed west from the harbour towards the grounded yacht. Although the sea was calm with just 10 knots of WNW wind, the flooding tide was pushing the vessel further onto the ledge. The yacht’s solo skipper had planned to refloat with the rising tide but soon realised he needed help.

Lifeboat Crew to the Rescue

After checking the sailor was safe and well, the Coxswain launched the lifeboat’s smaller ‘Y’ boat to get a closer look. They then towed the yacht into deeper, safer waters. The single-handed sailor was able to continue his journey without further trouble.

Yarmouth RNLI recovered their ‘Y’ boat and were back at the harbour by 1.36pm, ready for the next call.

RNLI: Lifesaving Thanks to Public Support

The RNLI is an independent charity that relies entirely on voluntary donations to keep its lifesaving service running 24/7. Without ongoing public support, vital rescues like this wouldn’t be possible.
