Yarmouth Lifeboat Rescues Two Yachts Tangled in Newtown Creek

Night-time Drama on the Water

Yarmouth’s trusty Severn class all-weather lifeboat, Eric and Susan Hiscock (Wanderer), sprang into action on the night of Saturday, 4 September 2021. At 9.34pm, HM Coastguard called them to assist two yachts that had become hopelessly tangled while anchoring in Newtown Creek.

Yachts Entangled, No One Responding

A 45ft yacht had collided with a smaller vessel, dragging their anchor and causing both boats to become intertwined. Despite visible lights on board, no one answered calls or signals from the crew. The lifeboat’s volunteer crew quickly set off east from Yarmouth Harbour, racing to the scene.

Rescue and Recovery Completed Safely

The yacht owner was eventually found ashore and transported back to their boat using the RNLI’s nimble ‘Y’ boat. Both vessels were thoroughly checked for damage, and all individuals accounted for. With everyone safe, the Severn class lifeboat departed Newtown Creek.

Back on Station and Ready By 10.59pm, the Yarmouth lifeboat was back at its berth, prepped and ready for the next call. The RNLI relies purely on voluntary donations to keep saving lives at sea.
