Worthing Goes Green with New Eco-Friendly Taxi Shelter

Living Roof Brings Nature to Town Centre

Worthing has unveiled a brand-new, eco-friendly taxi shelter in the heart of town. Replacing the old Chapel Road shelter, this bright new structure boasts a Living Roof bursting with wildflowers and sedum plants. This nectar-rich rooftop is a vital lifeline for bees, birds, butterflies, and other local wildlife, boosting biodiversity right in the urban centre.

Climate Benefits and Safer Streets

The green roof doesn’t just look good—it works hard. It absorbs rainwater, traps pollutants, and helps cut down on the town’s urban heat island effect, making Worthing more climate-resilient. Plus, the shelter now features improved lighting and visibility to keep vulnerable passengers safer after dark.

Local Council and Clear Channel Lead the Charge

Installed by Clear Channel UK and funded by Worthing Borough Council, the taxi shelter follows last year’s upgrade of two Living Roof bus stops on South Street. Councillor Vicki Wells, Cabinet Member for the Environment, said:

“It’s fantastic that this taxi shelter has been improved to help support biodiversity. The green roof is full of goodness for passing pollinators. Sedum flowers are especially accessible for honey bees and I can’t wait to see it in a few months’ time when the flowers begin to bloom – it will look fantastic.”

Colourful, Creative, and Community-Focused

The shelter is decked out in bright colours and features the borough’s “Time for Worthing” logo and website, adding a splash of local pride. Will Ramage, Managing Director of Clear Channel UK, praised the project:

“The installation of a Living Roof on top of a taxi shelter is a fantastic example of the numerous possibilities these structures can provide. We enjoy seeing how local authorities utilise Living Roofs to showcase how we can be creative in making space for wildlife, even in our most urban areas, and we look forward to our continued work with Worthing Borough Council in the future.”
