Students Furious as Portsmouth Uni Gifts 20 Syrian Refugees Free Rides

Portsmouth University has sparked outrage by offering scholarships to 20 Syrian refugees. Students claim it’s a slap in the face, especially as their own tuition fees soar and grants vanish.

£828K Scholarship Bill Riles Students

With tuition fees hitting at least £9,000 a year and living costs around £400 monthly, these scholarships will cost the university a whopping £828,000 over three years. Many argue that cash could be better spent.

Students say the money should go towards improving vital services like a 24/7 library or upgrading sports facilities. Instead, it’s funding ‘free rides’ for refugees while local students foot the bill.

‘Betrayal of Trust’ – Students Speak Out

Luke Freeman said, “Of course we empathise, and it is extremely sad what is happening in their home countries. However, there is little to no rational argument for offering them a scholarship other than to seek some sort of moral high ground.”

Many students feel the decision was pushed through by a small group, ignoring the “silent majority” who disapprove. They say the university is prioritising refugees over homegrown students, which they call “grossly unfair.”

Why Syrian Refugees? Students Demand Local Help First

There’s also anger over why Syrian refugees from the Middle East are being prioritised. Students argue the university has no moral obligation to fund international causes.

One student said, “If the university insists on handing out scholarships, they should at least help less well-off locals before aiding people overseas.”
