QA Hospital Nurses Launch Butterfly Suite to Help Bereaved Families Say Goodbye in Peace
A dedicated team of Emergency Department nurses at QA Hospital in Cosham are taking huge steps to comfort families facing heartbreak. When patients lose loved ones, there’s currently no special space for relatives to grieve in privacy. That’s about to change.
New Butterfly Suite Offers Dignity and Calm
The nurses are creating the Butterfly Suite — a peaceful, cosy haven where families can say their last goodbyes in a calm, respectful setting. The suite will feel like a “home-from-home,” thoughtfully furnished thanks to fundraising efforts by the staff themselves.
The name “Butterfly Suite” nods to the butterfly symbolising the transition from one life to the next — a powerful sign of hope and respect for those in mourning.
Butterfly Symbol Already Nationwide
This compassionate approach isn’t new. The same group pioneered using butterfly markers in hospital wards where patients have died, helping maintain dignity and calm. This idea, introduced by one nurse in 2011, won a national award and has since been adopted by NHS hospitals across the UK.
How You Can Help
Fundraising is still underway to fully furnish the suite and provide families the comfort they deserve in their darkest moments. If you want to support this touching project, visit Butterfly Suite fundraiser.
