Thanet Launches Hotel Watch to Battle Crime in Accommodation Sector

Police in Thanet are cracking down on crime in hotels and guesthouses with a new scheme called Hotel Watch. Officers from the Thanet Multi-Agency Task Force want staff in the accommodation industry across the district to spot warning signs of serious offences happening on their premises.

Fighting Child Exploitation and Trafficking

In partnership with the Thanet Community Safety Partnership and local businesses, the scheme targets crimes like child sexual exploitation, sexual offences, and human trafficking. The scheme kicked off on 7 June 2022 at Thanet District Council’s chambers, where business owners were briefed on how to identify and report suspicious activity.

Campaigner Sammy Woodhouse, a survivor of child abuse, shared her story and highlighted the crucial work needed to raise awareness of child sexual exploitation.

Training and Community Safety Efforts Underway

Throughout the summer, officers will roll out educational courses for hotel staff across Thanet. Inspector Ian Swallow from the Thanet Community Safety Unit urged:

“We are asking those working in hotels, guesthouses and other accommodation providers to help protect children and vulnerable people. While there is no more of an issue here than anywhere else, it’s vital to spot potential offending early. Hotels and guesthouses can play a key role in keeping people safe.”

He added, “Partnering with local businesses will make a real difference to the community and ensure Thanet stays a safe place to live and visit.”
