Chaos erupted on Sandiford Road, Sutton, as 12 fire engines and around 80 firefighters battled a fierce blaze at the famous Coombe accident repair centre. The single-storey industrial unit was engulfed in flames when crews arrived, sparking major safety fears.

The firefighters faced a tricky fight as the workshop stored gas cylinders alongside large quantities of thinners and paint. These hazardous materials raised serious concerns during the blaze. The fire brigade was alerted at 11:39pm and battled the inferno until 2:40pm, eventually bringing it under control.

Firefighters from Sutton, Wimbledon, New Malden, and nearby stations rushed to the scene. Their swift, coordinated efforts stopped the fire from spreading further, but damage to the Coombe centre was extensive.
