Fishing Fiasco: Anglers Nabbed Fishing During Close Season
Nathan Hart, 31, from Fleetwood, and Jonathan Mundell, 40, from Preston, got caught red-handed fishing on June 15, 2023—right in the heart of the close season when fishing is banned.
Close Season Rules Broken
The close season in England’s rivers runs from March 15 to June 15 every year. It’s designed to protect fish during their vulnerable spawning period. Breaking these rules is illegal and hits fish stocks hard.
Fines and Firm Action
Both men admitted breaching national byelaws at North Cheshire Magistrates Court. They were each slapped with a £191 fine plus costs.
An Environment Agency spokesperson said:
“Illegal fishing undermines the Environment Agency’s efforts to protect fish stocks and make fishing sustainable. The courts take these offences seriously, and we hope the penalties serve as a warning to anyone tempted to break the law.”
