Radio Legend Johnnie Walker Dies Aged 79

Radio icon Johnnie Walker has died aged 79, just two months after retiring from the BBC due to a battle with pulmonary fibrosis. The legendary broadcaster’s passing was announced live on BBC Radio 2 by DJ Bob Harris, who took over Walker’s hit show Sounds of the 70s.

A Voice That Defined Generations

For nearly six decades, Johnnie Walker was a beloved figure on British airwaves. Known for his warm style, sharp wit, and endless love of music, he captivated millions with shows like The Rock Show and Sounds of the 70s.

Helen Thomas, head of BBC Radio 2, said: “Everyone at Radio 2 is heartbroken about the passing of Johnnie, a much-loved broadcasting legend. He inspired a generation of presenters and shared his deep love of music with listeners in every show. He will be sorely missed by staff, listeners, and the industry.”

Resilient to the End

Walker’s wife Tiggy paid a heartfelt tribute, highlighting his strength and humour despite his illness.

“He remained his charming, humorous self to the end, showing incredible dignity in his battle with lung disease. It’s been a rollercoaster ride from start to finish. He’s now in a place of peace, and I couldn’t be more proud of him,” she said.

“What a day to go – he’ll be celebrating New Year’s Eve with a stash of great musicians in heaven.”

A Pioneer of Pirate and BBC Radio

Johnnie’s career kicked off in 1966 with the pirate station Swinging Radio England, followed by Radio Caroline, where he quickly became a household name. He joined BBC Radio 1 in 1969 and later moved to Radio 2 in 1997, hosting flagship shows that influenced generations and championed emerging artists.

Final Goodbye and Flood of Tributes

Walker’s retirement earlier this year marked the end of an era. In his final broadcast, he thanked fans for their loyal support.

“Thank you for being with me all these years. Take good care of yourself and those you love, and may we walk into the future with happiness in our hearts. God bless you.”

BBC Director General Tim Davie called him a “pop radio pioneer and champion of great music.” Bob Harris added:

“Johnnie was a hero of mine and so many others in broadcasting. His influence will continue to be felt for generations.”

Forever a Radio Legend

Johnnie Walker’s passion, professionalism, and pioneering spirit made him a true giant of British radio. His legacy will live on through the countless listeners and broadcasters he inspired. The airwaves will forever carry the sound of a true legend.
