Daylight has revealed the full extent of a significant rock collapse in Ventor

Daylight has revealed the full extent of a significant rock collapse that sent tonnes of earth crashing onto Ventnor’s Belgrave Road late last night (Friday), completely blocking the roadway and spilling debris onto Esplanade Road below.

Residents Shocked by Overnight Collapse

Locals were first alerted to the collapse of Windy Corner—an area known for its geological instability—at around 11pm. Witnesses reported hearing a loud “thud,” but many initially dismissed it as insignificant. However, others described the site as “an accident waiting to happen,” emphasizing the need for preventative measures such as rock netting similar to that installed at Gills Cliff.

Emergency Response and Road Closures

Island Roads operatives worked through the night, securing the scene until approximately 3am this morning (Saturday). Further assessments are expected to take place in the coming hours. As a result, Belgrave Road is currently closed between Church Street and Park Avenue, while Esplanade Road remains blocked.

Island Roads Issues Statement

At 10:40, Island Roads provided an update regarding the situation:

“Island Roads will continue to monitor this significant rockfall at Belgrave Road and take all necessary actions to protect the public. If required, we will extend the current road closure beyond Belgrave Road and Rex Steps.

“A detailed assessment of the movement will be undertaken, as this area is known for its geological instability. We will work with the council to determine the necessary steps to ensure safety, with the goal of removing the fallen rocks and reopening the road as soon as possible.

“As always, we will proceed only when we are confident there is no further imminent movement at this location.

“We will also be in contact with the private owners of the rockface to discuss their role in this process.

Island Roads has every sympathy with Ventnor residents who, once again, face disruption due to the town’s unique geological challenges. We assure them that we are working closely with the council to resolve this issue at the earliest opportunity.”

Next Steps

Authorities and engineers are expected to conduct thorough assessments today to determine whether further rockfalls are likely. Residents and motorists are advised to avoid the area until further notice.
