Massive Rockslide Shuts Ventnor Roads Overnight

Tonnes of rock and earth crashed down onto Ventnor’s Belgrave Road late Friday night, completely blocking the street and spilling debris onto Esplanade Road below. The collapse at the notorious Windy Corner has brought traffic chaos and fresh fears over the area’s unstable cliffs.

Residents Awaken to Shocking Rockfall

Locals first heard a thunderous “thud” around 11pm but many shrugged it off. It soon became clear the collapse was serious. One witness called Windy Corner “an accident waiting to happen,” urging urgent rock netting like the safety measures at Gills 1 to avoid future disasters.

Emergency Crews Work Through the Night

Island Roads teams raced to the scene, working until 3am to secure the area. Belgrave Road is now closed between Church Street and Park Avenue, with Esplanade Road also blocked under the debris. Drivers are warned to steer clear while clean-up and safety checks continue.

Island Roads Vows Swift Action

“We’re closely monitoring this major rockfall and will do everything to keep the public safe,” said Island Roads. “We may extend road closures beyond Belgrave Road and Rex Steps if necessary.”

The firm added: “A detailed geological assessment is underway. We are working with the council and private rockface owners to plan rock removal and reopen the road as soon as it’s safe.”

“We sympathise with Ventnor residents facing disruption yet again due to the town’s tricky geology. Rest assured, solving this quickly is our priority.”

Stay Clear: Assessments Underway

Experts will carry out thorough checks today to spot any further risk of rockfalls. Residents and motorists are urged to avoid the affected zones until safety is assured.
