Remote-Controlled Lifebuoy “Fasty” Trials on River Medway to Boost Water Safety

A new innovation in river rescue technology is making waves in Rochester and Strood. The Rochester Bridge Trust has begun testing a remote-controlled lifebuoy — affectionately nicknamed “Fasty” — on the River Medway, aiming to improve emergency response and community safety.

Fasty” can travel at speeds of up to 15km/h, zipping across the water to reach someone in distress — all while being controlled from dry land via a joystick. Early trials with local emergency services have demonstrated the device’s impressive speed, reliability, and ease of use.

In addition to its life-saving capabilities, Fasty is battery-powered, allowing it to run on renewable energy — making it an environmentally friendly addition to river safety efforts.

A spokesperson for the Rochester Bridge Trust said:

This modern technology offers a quick and effective way to help people in trouble on the river. It’s a practical solution for a historic waterway, benefiting workers, visitors, and the wider community alike.”

The Trust is working closely with local emergency teams to fine-tune the system and explore its potential wider deployment along the river. As water safety becomes an increasing priority, initiatives like Fasty represent an important step in protecting lives across the region.

Further updates on the rollout of Fasty and feedback from the ongoing trials are expected later this year.
