Newham Mosque Leader Jailed for Sexually Abusing Four Children Over Nearly a Decade

Decade-Long Abuse Shocks Newham Community

A mosque leader from Newham has been locked up for terrorising four children with sexual abuse spanning almost ten years. Qari Sher Mohammad, 61, of Woodford Road, Forest Gate, targeted youngsters between 2014 and 2023 while serving at a mosque in Kent.

The abuse first came to light in 2018 after one brave victim reported Mohammad to police. Despite an arrest then, he was not charged initially to avoid further trauma to the child. However, fresh allegations involving three more victims emerged between May 2022 and December 2023.

Mohammad was arrested again on 11 December 2023, triggering a full investigation that exposed the horrific extent of his crimes.

Convicted on 16 Counts, Jailed for 10 Years

Mohammad denied all charges but was found guilty at Canterbury Crown Court on 7 March 2025 of 16 counts of sexual touching of a child. On 12 September 2025, he was handed a hefty 10-year prison sentence.

In addition, a Sexual Harm Prevention Order bans him from certain activities and places for five years after his release.

Police Praise Victims for Bravery

Detective Constable Conor Middleton said: “This man was in a position of authority when these appalling offences were committed. The children showed immense courage by reporting his actions. I commend them and their parents for helping with the investigation.”

“Mohammad is now behind bars, where he should reflect on the damage he caused these vulnerable victims.”

This case has sent shockwaves through the Newham community and highlights the bravery of children speaking out against abuse.
