Spitfire Trailer Crashes on A3, Chaos Back to M25

A replica Spitfire headed for an Isle of Wight 1940s show sparked major tailbacks after its trailer overturned on the A3 today.

Trailer Flips Near Burnt Common

The disaster struck on the southbound A3 near Burnt Common, close to Burpham. The trailer carrying the painstakingly built aircraft sheared off the vehicle, smashing into an embankment and a tree.

Road Gridlock Back to M25

Surrey Police described the A3 traffic as “absolutely chaotic” with one lane blocked and queues stretching as far back as junction 10 of the M25 at Wisley.

Owner’s 28-Year Spitfire Project Nearly Wrecked

Terry Arlow, who spent 28 years building the replica from salvaged Spitfire parts, was on his way to the Isle of Wight show when disaster struck. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

“At around 11.15am, the trailer became detached and collided with a tree,” stated a Surrey Police spokesman. “The road remained partially closed while we recovered the trailer and aircraft.”

The incident is a stark reminder of how quickly vintage aircraft displays can turn into motorway mayhem.
