Southsea Shop Shut Over ‘One of Worst’ Mouse Infestations Ever
A Southsea convenience store has been slammed shut after inspectors uncovered what they called “one of the worst mouse infestations” they’ve ever seen. Premier Express Nice ‘n’ Fresh on Victoria Road North was served a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Notice by Portsmouth City Council following a public complaint.
Rodent Invasion Leaves Store in Ruins
Environmental health officers found mouse droppings scattered on shelves right next to sweets and other food items. Even worse, gnawed crisps and snacks were still on sale — clear evidence that the infestation had contaminated the food, posing a serious public health risk.
The shop was shut immediately to stop the health hazard in its tracks.
Legal Action: Court Bans Shop from Trading
On 12 February, Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court issued a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Order against Pinal and Mehul Ltd, the company running the store. The order forbids them from trading until the mouse nightmare is completely eradicated. The firm was also hit with full legal costs.
“The environmental health officer who visited described this as one of the worst infestations they have ever seen in a retail business,” said Cllr Lee Hunt, Cabinet Member for Community Safety, Leisure and Sport at Portsmouth City Council.
“Mice can spread diseases like Salmonella and Campylobacter through their droppings and urine. When they come into contact with open food or contaminate packet exteriors as they did here, there’s an imminent risk of serious illness to the public.
“We work with most businesses before it gets to this stage, and thankfully the majority of traders maintain good hygiene.”
Shop Must Stay Closed Until Pest Control Proven
Portsmouth City Council confirmed Premier Express Nice ‘n’ Fresh must stay shut until inspectors are fully satisfied that adequate pest control and food safety measures are in place. Until then, the nightmare rodent invasion stays victorious — but not for long.
