No End in Sight for Southbound Closure After Serious Collision

A deadly smash on the A3 near Hindhead Tunnel in Surrey has caused chaos, with both carriageways shut for over 12 hours. Emergency crews are still clearing the mess, with no reopening time confirmed for the southbound side.

Three-Car Collision Triggers Full Closure

The crash involving three vehicles happened Tuesday evening just before the tunnel on the southbound carriageway. Surrey Police quickly shut down the A3 in both directions to manage the emergency response and launch an investigation.

Police handed the scene back to National Highways around 6am on Wednesday. After emergency barrier repairs on the central reservation, the northbound carriageway reopened — but the southbound lanes remain locked down.

Long Detours in Place as Clean-Up Continues

Crews are busy clearing debris and dealing with hazardous spillages caused by the collision. Drivers heading southbound are urged to follow the solid triangle diversion signs to avoid the closure.

  • Exit the A3 onto the A31 westbound at Stag Hill, near Guildford.
  • Continue to the roundabout with the A325 at Farnham.
  • Take the first exit onto the A325.
  • Follow further diversion signage as directed.
