Southbound A3 Closed Indefinitely After Fatal Hindhead Crash
A horrific three-car smash near Surrey’s Hindhead Tunnel has plunged the A3 into chaos. Both carriageways were shut for more than 12 hours. Emergency crews remain on site, with no sign of the southbound lanes reopening anytime soon.
Fatal Collision Sparks Full Closure
The devastating crash happened Tuesday evening on the southbound A3 just before the tunnel. Surrey Police swiftly closed the road in both directions to deal with the emergency and launch a full investigation.
By 6am Wednesday, the scene was handed to National Highways. After urgent repairs to the central reservation barriers, the northbound side reopened — but the southbound carriageway remains sealed off.
Massive Detours and Ongoing Clean-Up
Crews are still clearing debris and tackling hazardous spillages from the smash. Southbound drivers face long diversions. Follow the solid triangle diversion signs to navigate around the closure:
- Exit the A3 onto the A31 westbound at Stag Hill near Guildford.
- Head to the roundabout with the A325 at Farnham.
- Take the first exit onto the A325.
- Follow further diversion signs from there.
Motorists are warned the southbound shutdown could last for some time as investigations and cleanup continue.
