Spike in Child Abuse Referrals Alarms Police
West Mercia Police reported a staggering 65% rise in child abuse referrals from 2024 to 2025.
“Our utmost focus is on protecting and safeguarding children,” said Detective Inspector Joanne Mayo-Evans from the cyber online child exploitation team. “This week has brought to the forefront the unseen work we do every week and many children are now safer as a result of it.” “We will relentlessly pursue those who cause harm to children and bring them to justice through the courts.”
High-Tech Tools and Training Used in the Fight
The investigation featured a mobile digital forensics van deployed to various locations and a specially trained police dog skilled in tracking digital devices. Officers also held training sessions, teaching professionals and parents to spot early warning signs of exploitation and take swift action.
