Four people have been injured after a gunman opened fire near crowds celebrating the FIFA World Cup in Los Angeles, sparking a major police response and a manhunt for the suspect.
The shooting happened at around 10pm on Sunday in East Los Angeles, where hundreds of football fans had gathered to celebrate during the Mexico v England World Cup match.
Emergency services were called to the junction of Whittier Boulevard and Leonard Avenue, where officers quickly established a large crime scene following reports of gunfire.
Celebrations turn to chaos
Witness footage captured the moment celebrations descended into panic, with cars performing doughnuts in the road before multiple gunshots rang out.
Crowds were seen running for cover as people fled the area, while at least one victim received first aid from members of the public before paramedics arrived.
Victims found at multiple locations
Police later confirmed additional victims were located at nearby locations along Whittier Boulevard, including at the junctions with Amalia Avenue and 6th Street, and Amalia Avenue and Whittier Boulevard.
Although the victims were discovered in different locations, detectives believe the incidents are linked and are treating them as a single shooting.
All four casualties were taken to hospital. Their conditions have not been released.
Investigation underway
Detectives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department have launched an investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
No arrests have been made and the gunman remains outstanding.
Officers are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or captured mobile phone or dashcam footage in the area to come forward.
Enquiries remain ongoing.
