A man who assaulted restaurant workers before attempting to drive away while drunk with a child in his car has been jailed. Michal Korgul, 39, of Wyville Road, Frome, was sentenced to 35 weeks in prison at Salisbury Magistrates’ Court on 23 July after pleading guilty to a string of offences. He admitted driving whilst disqualified, two counts of common assault, assault by beating, and failing to provide a specimen of breath.

Abuse at Service Station

The incident unfolded shortly before 10pm on 21 July at the Burger King restaurant at Grenada Services, Warminster. Wiltshire Police were called after reports that Korgul, who was intoxicated, had become abusive towards staff.

Child Found in Vehicle

When officers arrived, they spotted Korgul driving a vehicle around the service station car park.

Police discovered a child was inside the vehicle, while Korgul appeared heavily intoxicated. Alcohol was found inside the car.

Korgul refused to provide a roadside breath specimen and was arrested at the scene. The child was safely returned home.

Prison Sentence and Driving Ban

Appearing before Salisbury Magistrates’ Court, Korgul pleaded guilty to all offences. He was sentenced to:

  • 35 weeks’ imprisonment
  • Disqualified from driving for 40 months
  • Ordered to pay £200 compensation to his victims

Officer Praises Victims

Following the sentencing, PC George Malin-Davis said:

“On arrival at the scene, officers found Korgul was visibly intoxicated, his speech was slurred and he was unsteady on his feet. He was clearly in no fit state to be behind the wheel of a car, let alone in the company of a child.

It does not bear thinking about what could have happened had police not been alerted and intervened.”

He also praised the victims and witnesses for helping secure a swift conviction.

“I’d like to thank the victims and witnesses involved for their swift courage, resilience, and flexibility in working with us to gain evidence and ensure Korgul was charged and put before the courts immediately.

“I am pleased that on this occasion a custodial sentence has been given.

Korgul targeted young female staff members who were just trying to do their job. His punishment reflects his total disregard for the law.”

Wiltshire Police said the case highlights the dangers of drink-driving and thanked those who reported the incident, preventing what could have had far more serious consequences.
