Firefighters have rescued a 12-year-old donkey after she became trapped in deep mud at a farm in Essex.

A crew from Old Harlow Fire Station was called to the farm in Great Hallingbury after the animal became stuck and was unable to free herself.

Firefighters worked to dig away the mud surrounding the donkey before eventually managing to release her.

Crew Manager Joe Fisher said the team had worked “incredibly hard” during the rescue.

He said it was a relief to see the donkey back on her feet, eating and reunited with the rest of her herd.

Following her ordeal, the donkey even approached the firefighters who had rescued her and allowed them to stroke her.

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said the successful rescue was carried out by its Old Harlow crew.
