Government Cracks Down on Shambles at HMP Rochester
The government has swung into action over shocking conditions at HMP Rochester. Following a scathing report from the Chief Inspector of Prisons, urgent support measures have been announced. Urgent Refurbs to Stop “Worst Conditions” in Years
In response to an Urgent Notification issued earlier this month, HMP Rochester is set for a rapid overhaul. Inspectors slammed the accommodation as “some of the worst conditions seen in recent years,” highlighting filthy cells and broken showers. The government plans to fix these as a matter of priority, improving living space for inmates and staff alike.
Boost for Prison Leadership and Security Crackdown
The plan includes extra support for the prison’s management team and specialist training for officers. This will focus on spotting prisoners at risk and tightening security to wipe out the “endemic” drug trade. Violence inside HMP Rochester has soared, with inspectors describing wings as “chaotic.” Only a third of inmates currently take part in education or productive activities during the day.
“I inherited a prison crisis,” admitted Lord James Timpson, Minister for Prisons. “Violence and illicit drug use are dangerously high and cells are in squalid conditions. We are taking immediate action to improve conditions at HMP Rochester, support our staff, and tackle the root causes of violence.”
Rehab Failures Under the Spotlight
Inspectors also slammed HMP Rochester for failing its rehab role. Less than a third of prisoners are engaged in education or training, leaving many without skills to turn their lives around. The prison will roll out a new curriculum aimed at boosting participation and preparing inmates for life after release.
What Is the Urgent Notification?
First introduced in 2017, the Urgent Notification system is triggered when inspectors spot serious failings. HMP Rochester is only the fourth prison in the last year to get this warning — and the first Category C prison. The government says the measures will tackle overcrowding and improve safety to protect inmates and staff.
