Migrant Boat Breaks Apart in Channel: One Dead, 62 Rescued

A dramatic rescue unfolded in the early hours of Monday after a migrant boat overloaded with over 60 people shattered mid-Channel. One passenger has been confirmed dead.

Emergency Mayday Sparks Massive Cross-Border Rescue

The drama began just after midnight as French surveillance centre CROSS Gris-Nez spotted the vessel leaving the French coast. With worsening weather, the maritime tug Abeille Normandie was dispatched to trail the boat.

Tragedy struck when the boat started falling apart under surveillance. CROSS Gris-Nez sent out a Mayday Relay, triggering a high-speed, coordinated rescue by French and British authorities.

Rescue Operation in Full Swing: Helicopters and Lifeboats Join In

  • Abeille Normandie launched three hi-speed rescue craft.
  • The RNLI lifeboat 13-07 from Dungeness and the Border Force vessel Ranger raced to assist.
  • A UK surveillance plane and a French Navy Dauphin helicopter with medical specialists arrived from Boulogne-sur-Mer for aerial support.

Miracle Saves 62 Lives; One Body Recovered

Altogether, 62 people were plucked from the water. Abeille Normandie saved 50 migrants, RNLI lifeboat crews rescued two, and Border Force teams saved nine more. All survivors received urgent medical checks onboard.

The Dauphin helicopter spotted an unconscious person in the water. RNLI crews pulled them out, but sadly the individual was pronounced dead aboard the vessel.

A mother and child suffering severe hypothermia were airlifted to Boulogne-sur-Mer Hospital for emergency care. The others were landed at Boulogne quay, where French emergency services continued treatment.

Warning Issued: Channel Crossing Perils Rise as Record Migrant Numbers Swell

The Maritime Prefect of the Channel and North Sea issued a stark warning against the dangerous crossings. Over 12,000 attempts have been recorded so far in 2025, potentially a new record for deadly Channel migration.

“We can confirm there has been a tragic incident in the Channel involving a small boat in French waters which has resulted in the loss of one life. We continue to work closely with our French partners to address these dangerous crossings.” – UK Government Spokesperson

This grim operation highlights the mounting risks migrants face attempting the world’s busiest and deadliest maritime corridor.
