Wroughton Man Jailed for Dangerous Overtake That Wrecked Family Car

Thomas Grey from Wroughton has been locked up for 26 months after a reckless overtake left two children and a driver seriously injured. Swindon Crown Court slapped Grey with a 49-month driving ban and an extended retest during sentencing on 20th November 2020.

Morning Horror on Wharf Road

Grey was driving his Mitsubishi Spacestar along Wharf Road towards Swindon at 7:30am on 30th December 2019. He came up behind a small white van and a Seat Exeo, which was driven by an off-duty police officer doing about 40mph.

Without a safe view ahead, Grey forced a risky overtake on a blind right-hand bend, moving into the opposite lane. His path collided head-on with a Toyota Aygo coming the other way.

Dashcam Captures Moment of Madness

Both drivers tried to avoid the crash but smashed heavily. The impact seriously injured the Aygo driver and two young children travelling in the car, who cannot be named for legal reasons. Grey’s own dashcam caught the terrifying collision.

PC Jonathan Brunt, investigating the crash, said: “Thomas Grey showed complete disregard for the safety of other road users. His dangerous overtake caused serious injuries to two young children and the Toyota driver. There is never an excuse for driving like this. The so-called ‘moment of madness’ has had life-changing consequences for many involved.”
