Reading Man Jailed for Attempted Murder in Brutal Knife Attack
David Rackett, 57, from Scours Lane, Reading, has been jailed for 14 years after being convicted of attempted murder. He must also serve an extra four years on licence following a hearing at Reading Crown Court on 15 March.
Violent Attack on Woman in Her Forties
The shocking attack happened around 9.45pm on Sunday 16 August last year. Rackett met a woman in her forties on Oxford Road, and they walked together to a boat where he was living on Scours Lane. Just ten minutes later, Rackett threw the woman to the floor and began strangling her.
The victim fought back and broke free, but Rackett then stabbed her in the throat, saying her life “wasn’t worth living.” He also lunged a knife at her stomach, but she managed to grab the blade and flee to safety.
Police: Dangerous Offender Sentenced
Rackett was arrested the same night and taken into custody. Speaking after the sentencing, Sergeant Andy Philpott and Detective Constable Kevin Godding of Reading CID said:
“Rackett is clearly a dangerous man and the sentence handed down today reflects the serious nature of his crime.”
“It is remarkable the victim was not left with more significant injuries given the level of violence used in this attack.”
“We hope this conviction shows that we will use all of our resources to prosecute those who commit such serious violence.”
