A Man Has Been Sentenced To Life In Prison For The Murder Of 63-year-old Lorraine Mills In Southampton

Devastating Murder of Beloved Family Woman in Millbrook

The body of Lorraine Mill, a cherished mother, sister, and grandmother, was found by her daughter at her home on Mansel Road East, Millbrook, at about 8.30pm on Monday, 21 November last year.

Man Arrested After Shocking Confession

Richard Shaw, 48, of Derby Road, was arrested shortly after he called police to confess to murdering Lorraine. Shaw was known to Lorraine and her family, amplifying the shock.

A post-mortem revealed Lorraine died from multiple stab wounds. Police searching Southampton Common found the kitchen knife Shaw had used, discarded in some bushes.

Shaw Pleads Guilty and Gets Life Sentence

On 30 January 2023, Shaw pleaded guilty to murder at Winchester Crown Court. Today (Wednesday 5 April), he was sentenced to life behind bars, with a minimum term of 30 years.

Family’s Heartbreaking Tribute

“Nothing can or ever will fully describe the horror that you brought upon us,” said Lorraine’s daughter in a victim personal statement. “I am totally lost, broken and empty.”

She described how the tragedy has “destroyed her life and those around her” and will scar her young daughter, who was with her when she discovered Lorraine’s bloodied and lifeless body.

“My daughter, only nine years old, saw nanny lying cold and lifeless. No child should have to see that,” she said. “Your callous and evil actions caused complete devastation. But as a family, we will grow stronger because of you. This will bring us closer, not break us.”

Police Praise Family and Staff Efforts

Acting Detective Chief Inspector Howard Broadribb condemned the “abhorrent crime” and commended the family’s courage. “Richard Shaw will spend a long time in prison for the devastation he caused,” he said.

Broadribb added, “I hope this sentence offers some closure, though nothing can fill the void left by Lorraine’s loss. The investigation was brutal, but our team worked tirelessly with Lorraine’s memory at heart.”

“We’re committed to justice for victims of such horrific crimes. I’m glad the judge imposed a sentence that reflects the seriousness of Shaw’s offences.”
