Son Jailed for Brutal Murder of Mum in Birkenhead Flat
Police were called to a flat in Vittoria Court, Birkenhead, at around 7.15pm on May 12 after concerns for the welfare of 62-year-old Karen Wheeler. Paramedics arrived, but Karen was tragically pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of death was blunt force trauma.
Mark Wheeler Pleads Guilty and Gets Nearly 16 Years
Mark Wheeler, 52, Karen’s son, from Vittoria Close, was charged with her murder. He pleaded guilty earlier this year. Today, Liverpool Crown Court sentenced him to 15 years and 10 months behind bars.
Detective Condemns Shocking Attack
Detective Inspector Phil Ryan called the assault “truly shocking and brutal.” He revealed it was Karen’s other son, David, who found her body and locked Mark inside the home until police arrived.
“Nobody can begin to understand the impact the circumstances and fact of her sudden death has had on her family and friends,” said Det. Insp. Ryan. “Nothing can bring Karen back but we hope this sentence brings some justice and peace to the family.”
Police Pledge Tough Action on Violence and Domestic Abuse
Merseyside Police vowed to tackle violence against women and girls with full force. They stressed the importance of supporting victims of domestic abuse in all its forms – psychological, financial, sexual, emotional, and physical.
Detective Inspector Ryan added: “We work closely with support organisations, local authorities, and charities to ensure victims have access to essential services, including refuges. Raising awareness is key to preventing these crimes.”
