Sex Offender Busted with Spy Sunglasses in Kent

Kent Police caught a sex offender from Ashford red-handed with high-tech spy gear, including sunglasses fitted with a hidden camera. The evidence helped secure John Gilliver’s conviction.

Suspicious Beach Behaviour Leads to Arrest

Gilliver, 62, from Maidstone Road, Charing, was nabbed on July 10, 2022, after officers spotted him acting suspiciously and snapping photos on Folkestone Harbour beach. Police seized a pair of recording sunglasses and a camera-equipped neck chain.

Hidden Cameras Found in Victims’ Homes

A police search of Gilliver’s home uncovered more secret recording devices. Data from these gadgets revealed indecent images, including those of children. Investigators also discovered Gilliver had installed hidden cameras in the homes of a man and a woman he knew, spying on them for his own twisted gratification.

Jailed for 20 Months and Banned from Contact

Gilliver pleaded guilty to multiple offences, including making indecent images of children and voyeurism. He was sentenced to one year and eight months behind bars and slapped with a Sexual Harm Prevention Order to protect the public after his release.

Detective Constable Jemma Bell said: “Gilliver is a deceitful criminal who abused people’s trust to carry out his crimes. We will explore every avenue open to us to protect victims from sexual offenders. I’m pleased he’s now in prison, and the Sexual Harm Prevention Order will keep the public safe.”
