Police Reassure Locals Amid Heavy Security
Commander Dominic Murphy, head of the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command, addressed the public’s concerns following a heavy police presence in Caddington.
“I’m aware that the recent police activity has caused concern among the local community. We have been working closely with Bedfordshire Police and the Eastern Region Special Operations Unit (ERSOU) to prioritise public safety, especially for nearby residents. Although our searches are complete, officers will remain on-site to safely remove all hazardous materials.”
“This operation has been supported by specialist officers to ensure no one is put at risk. We thank the local community for their patience and support. Now that charges have been made, we urge the public to avoid speculation so the criminal justice process can proceed without interference.”
Investigation Timeline
The probe started on 6 May, when Bedfordshire Police found suspicious substances at a residential address in Caddington. A 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing explosions likely to endanger life and possession of Class A drugs. He was initially bailed while inquiries continued.
Given the nature of the materials, the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command was notified but did not take over immediately. After further searches on 13 May, the Met’s unit assumed lead responsibility for the investigation.
Officers from Bedfordshire Police and ERSOU remain involved to ensure the safe removal and disposal of dangerous items from the property.
