Carer Admits Smothering Dementia-Stricken Mother in Tragic Bexleyheath Case

Kevin Pearce, 59, a full-time carer from Bexleyheath, has confessed to smothering his 89-year-old mother, Eileen Pearce, who suffered from dementia. The devastating incident unfolded at their shared home on June 5, 2021.

From Murder Charge to Manslaughter Plea

Originally charged with murder, Pearce promptly admitted causing his mother’s death but later claimed to have no memory of the act. He was set to face trial at the Old Bailey in January.

However, after psychiatric evaluations, Pearce pleaded guilty to manslaughter on grounds of diminished responsibility during a recent court hearing.

Prosecutor Michelle Nelson KC said: “In the circumstances and a review, the CPS think it’s appropriate to accept the plea.”

Conditional Bail and Pending Sentence

Defence barrister Katy Thorne KC successfully secured conditional bail for Pearce, highlighting his understanding of the seriousness of his actions and compliance with bail conditions.

Thorne said: “He has always understood he has been in jeopardy of at least a manslaughter conviction and in those circumstances, he has not breached his bail.”

Sentencing has been pushed back to February 16, with a review hearing scheduled for January 15. Judge Judy Khan KC granted the bail extension amid the ongoing legal process.

A Community Rallying Over Carer Support and Mental Health

The case has sparked a wave of concern across Bexleyheath, shining a harsh light on the intense pressures faced by carers of family members with dementia and other debilitating conditions.

Locals and experts alike are calling for better mental health resources and support systems to prevent such heartbreaking tragedies in the future.
