Serious Blaze and Collapse at Pioneer Mill in Radcliffe

A huge fire ripped through Pioneer Mill in Radcliffe, Bury, last night, leaving one firefighter seriously injured after part of the building gave way.

Firefighters from Three Counties Battle Fierce Inferno

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) scrambled nine fire engines and specialist gear after the alarm sounded around 7.50pm on Saturday, 27 September. Crews from Lancashire and Cheshire joined the fight to tackle the huge commercial fire on Milltown Street. While the main blaze is now out, firefighters remain on site to douse hot spots and prevent flare-ups.

Firefighter Trapped as Mill Collapses

In the early stages, part of the derelict mill collapsed, trapping a firefighter beneath. Emergency teams swiftly treated and rushed them to hospital, where their condition remains serious.

Full Investigation Launched, Support in Place

GMFRS confirmed a thorough inquiry is underway with the Fire Brigade Union (FBU) to find out what caused the collapse. The goal: to learn vital lessons and improve safety for all firefighters facing perilous situations.

Carlos Meakin, deputy chief fire officer at GMFRS, said: “I want to commend our crews and partners for their bravery and professionalism during this tough incident. Our thoughts are with the injured firefighter and their family. We will offer full support during this difficult time.”

Fire crews will stay on at Pioneer Mill alongside Greater Manchester Police, Bury Council, and the Environment Agency to secure the area today and overnight.
