Hackney Man Jailed for Life After Racy Arson Horror

A 64-year-old Hackney man has been locked up for life after setting fire to his flat in a shocking racially motivated attack. Ian Pitkin, from Newick Road, Lower Clapton, deliberately sparked the blaze that forced a family to throw their baby out of a first-floor window to save its life.

Baby Thrown from Window to Safety

The terrifying fire broke out on March 20, 2024, leaving six people needing medical help. In a desperate bid to escape the flames, the family hurled their infant baby down to waiting relatives below. Miraculously, the baby escaped injury. Sadly, another resident fractured their hip jumping from a window to get away from the inferno.

Weapons and Petrol Found After Arson Attack

Emergency teams rushed to the ground floor flat at around 12:45pm. Pitkin was found injured and arrested at the scene. Police later uncovered jerry cans full of petrol, four air weapons, three knives, and two hammers in his car.

Judge Brands Attack ‘Hate Crime’ Against Jewish People

His Honour Judge Fugallo said, “This offence was motivated by, and demonstrates hostility towards people of Jewish faith.” Pitkin pleaded guilty to arson with intent to endanger life, multiple weapons charges, and was sentenced to life with a minimum term of six years and 17 days.

Police Praise Victims’ Bravery Amid Horror

Detective Chief Superintendent James Conway, Hackney and Tower Hamlets policing lead, said:

“Pitkin’s actions endangered the lives of his neighbours, who were forced to flee their homes in fear for their lives. Several victims had to jump from windows, and a family even had to throw their baby to relatives below. It’s remarkable nobody was more seriously injured.”

He added the victims’ impact statements spoke volumes about the trauma caused by the explosions and fire engulfing the property.

This case highlights the terrible consequences of racially motivated hate crimes. Authorities have commended the courage of the victims who acted quickly to escape the deadly blaze.
