Hornchurch Man’s High-Stakes Cannabis Farm Busted in £70k Drug Haul
A Hornchurch man has been caught growing a huge cannabis crop worth nearly £70,000 to bankroll mortgage overpayments and clear a drug debt.
£70,000 Cannabis Crop Found in Essex Outbuilding
David Haynes, from Nelwyn Avenue, ran an elaborate cannabis operation from an outbuilding behind a property he owned on South End Road, Essex. While the main house was rented out, the outbuilding had been turned into a high-tech grow room.
Police swooped on January 22 and uncovered almost 6,000 cannabis saplings in one room and 122 mature plants in another. They also seized air circulation fans, oil-filled radiators, powerful lighting units worth over £1,000, and reflective insulation boards used to boost plant growth.
Drug Operation Funded Huge Mortgage Overpayments
A drug expert valued the haul just under £70,000, noting the mature plants were used to create new cuttings, proving the operation was ongoing. Investigations revealed Haynes pumped large sums into his mortgage: £58,000 in December 2023 plus £38,000 across two payments the previous year. He admitted the cannabis farm helped pay off a drug debt.
Haynes Avoids Jail but Faces Community Punishment
Haynes pleaded guilty to cannabis production and was handed a 21-month prison sentence, suspended for two years. He must also complete 150 hours of unpaid work and a 30-day rehabilitation programme.
Detective Constable Megan Tighe, who led the investigation, said: “This was a very sophisticated set-up, clearly well-established. It was evident that Haynes was cultivating cannabis on a commercial scale, and the financial records show a suspicious correlation between the drug operation and his mortgage overpayments.
“Drugs are a menace to society, and we won’t stand by while cannabis grown in operations like this ends up on the streets, where it can cause harm within our communities.”
Essex police are cracking down hard on illegal drug farms and urge the public to report any suspicious activity in their neighbourhoods.
