Liberal Democrat boss Sir Ed Davey slapped with speeding fine after clocking 73mph in a 60mph zone on the M1.
Speeding slip-up on the motorway
Sir Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats, was caught driving well over the limit near Caddington on the M1 motorway. He hit 73mph in a 60mph zone, leading to a speeding ticket issued by Bedfordshire Police.
Missed deadline costs him
In a letter of explanation, Sir Ed admitted he tried to pay the fine but missed providing his driving licence details due to a “genuine oversight.” This error meant the case went before magistrates in March under the Single Justice Procedure, a system for straightforward offences.
Shock penalty – £72 fine plus points
At Luton Magistrates’ Court, Sir Ed was fined £72, with an extra £28 victim surcharge. He also picked up three penalty points on his licence. Thankfully, he escaped prosecution costs.
A Liberal Democrat spokesperson said: “Ed inadvertently broke the speed limit on the M1, which he is sorry for. He has paid the fine and accepted the points on his licence.”
