Neighbourhood Nightmare: Man Jailed for Throwing Acid in Shocking Attack

A man who doused his neighbour with sulphuric acid in a brutal assault has been locked up for 20 years. Santokh Johal, 53, from Leyton, was sentenced at Snaresbrook Crown Court on 10 December. He must serve at least 15 years before being considered for parole.

Acid Attack Caught Live on Phone with Police

The terrifying attack unfolded on 4 January 2019. The victim, a man in his 30s, called police at 6.57pm, reporting Johal threatening to stab him outside his Leyton home. While still on the phone, the victim opened his lounge window—but as soon as Johal saw it, he hurled a bottle of corrosive liquid straight at him.

The substance—later identified as 91% sulphuric acid—began burning the victim’s skin instantly. Johal then fled, leaving his neighbour writhing in agony. Emergency services rushed the victim to hospital where he required skin grafts over 20% of his body. He now attends monthly therapy sessions at a specialist burns hospital, with treatment expected to continue indefinitely.

Victim’s Harrowing Statement: “I am Scarred for Life”

“Since this incident, I have not been able to sleep because I often see the defendant in my dreams trying to finish me off. I constantly watch over my shoulder and panic when I see someone who looks like Mr Johal—even though I know he’s behind bars,” the victim told the court.

“My body does not feel like my own anymore. I must wear long sleeves and jackets even in hot weather just to hide the scars. I rarely leave the house now and dread facing the public. This crime has robbed me of a normal life and left me anxious all the time.”

“Mr Johal has ruined me for life and never showed any remorse.”

Detective Condemns Attack as ‘Horrific’

Detective Constable Jamie Howden, who led the investigation, described the assault as “horrific” and said the victim’s injuries will be a lifelong reminder of that night. “Although nothing will erase those scars, the victim can take comfort in knowing that justice has been done,” he added.
