Paedo Caught After Attempting to Snatch Toddler in Heywood Aldi
Sergejus Paskevicius, 61, of Orchard Street, Heywood, has been slapped with a three-year-and-two-month sentence for trying to abduct a child. The chilling incident unfolded at Aldi on Bradshaw Street on 23 July 2022, sparking shock and outrage in the local community.
Horrifying Attempt Caught on CCTV
Greater Manchester Police swooped after parents reported the attempted snatch. CCTV footage showed Paskevicius calmly finishing his shop before heading to the front window area near a shelf. That’s when he grabbed the family’s youngest child while the mum was in the queue.
The elder sibling courageously fought to free his toddler brother and managed to bring him safely back to their mother. Paskevicius then brazenly strolled out of the store like nothing had happened.
Swift Police Action and Arrest
Following a social media appeal, cops pounced on Paskevicius, arresting him on suspicion of kidnapping. A search of his home uncovered clothing matching what he wore during the attempted abduction.
“Paskevicius was a danger to society for his shocking actions,” said Detective Sergeant Andrew Whitehill of GMP’s Rochdale district. “Thankfully, his sinister intentions didn’t lead to anything more serious. It’s every parent’s worst nightmare.”
Community Reassured as Police Boost Patrols
DS Whitehill urged Heywood residents to speak up if they’re worried, praising the local police’s commitment to keeping neighbourhoods safe. Officers are keeping a keen eye on the area through dedicated patrols and the community messaging system, Bee In The Loop.
Parents are reminded to stay vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour immediately.
