Husband Jailed for Life After Brutally Stabbing Wife to Death on New Year’s Day
Chilling Plan Ends in Murder
Shane Simmonds, 39, has been given a life sentence with a minimum of 32 years for the cold-blooded murder of his wife, Tia. The attack happened at their home on Parbury Road, Forest Hill, on New Year’s Day. Judge Philip Katz KC handed down the sentence today at the Old Bailey.
The court heard Simmonds had plotted the killing for over a month. He searched online for “how long for a dead body to smell” and researched sleeping pill overdoses before drugging and stabbing Tia in the neck.
Heartbreaking Family Tributes
Tia, aged 32, was described by her father as a “strong, determined woman” and a devoted mother to four children. Addressing Simmonds in court, he said: “My daughter Tia was an incredible woman. She made me proud every day with all she accomplished. There’s no forgiveness in me for the coward before me, or anyone who would support such a monster.”
Tia’s godmother added the family welcomed Simmonds with open arms, only for him to betray their trust by brutally taking Tia’s life, leaving the family shattered.
Horrific Details of the Killing
On the day of the murder, Simmonds waited until his children left the house. He then mixed 30 sleeping pills into two drinks and gave one to Tia, calling it a “health shot.” When she sipped only a little and refused the rest, he stabbed her twice in the neck as she came out of the shower.
After the attack, Simmonds hid Tia’s body in the attic, covered with bedding and clothes. He then cleaned the scene, collected the children and Tia’s mother, and lied that Tia had gone out with a friend and was staying in a hotel.
A Decade of Lies Unveiled
The court learned the couple had been married for ten years but their relationship was strained. Simmonds had lost his prison officer job before the pandemic and was driving for Uber. He also struggled with gambling debts and infidelity, which Tia had suspected.
In a police interview, Simmonds claimed he was depressed and “felt nothing” when he stabbed his wife. Judge Katz dismissed any suggestion of mental illness, stating no evidence supported this defence.
Justice for Tia
Simmonds walked into Lewisham Police Station two days after the murder and confessed: “I f***ed up big this time, I killed my wife.” He also admitted to raping another woman. He will now serve at least 32 years behind bars before parole eligibility.
Tia’s family hope his prison sentence offers some closure for the tragic loss of a loving mother and business owner, whose life was stolen far too soon.
