Life for Monster Who Stabbed Teen Mum to Death at Train Station
Brutal Murder Shocks Crawley Commuters
A man cold-bloodedly stabbed his teenage girlfriend — and mother of his child — to death in front of horrified commuters at Crawley railway station. Jason Flore, 26, was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 21 years at Hove Crown Court for the savage killing of 19-year-old Stephanie Marie.
On August 18 last year, Flore plunged a knife into Stephanie’s heart at a deserted station car park, ending her young life in a savage explosion of violence, fuelled by anger and booze, said Judge Jeremy Gold KC.
Toxic Relationship Turned Deadly
Both originally from Mauritius, the couple had been living rough in a tent near the station. Their volatile relationship began when Stephanie was only 14 and Flore 21, with controlling and abusive behaviour from day one. By 17, Stephanie had given birth to their child.
“If she sought to assert herself in any way, you would respond with violence,” Judge Gold told Flore. “By the time of her murder, you had successfully drawn her away from her family.”
The Shocking Day of the Attack
Witnesses saw the pair arguing loudly near the station footbridge on the morning of August 18. Flore’s aggression escalated quickly. Within moments, he stabbed Stephanie in the chest, piercing her heart and aorta. Emergency responders found Stephanie curled up inside their tent, but she died despite their efforts.
The court heard both had been drinking heavily the previous day. The judge described the attack as a “fit of anger, possibly revenge.”
Flore’s Cowardly Escape and Arrest
After the brutal attack, Flore fled with his dog. Chilling CCTV showed him calmly walking the dog just 45 minutes later, disguised in a red coat. He tried to cover his tracks by ditching bloodstained clothes and even taking off his trousers to avoid being identified.
He attempted to board a bus without a ticket but was denied. Police finally caught him near Three Bridges station, where he lay on the ground as his dog barked protectively. Armed officers arrested him.
Flore Snubs Sentencing Hearing
Flore refused to face the court at sentencing, earning Judge Gold’s ire for showing “a total lack of respect” to Stephanie’s devastated family. His no-show was seen as a pathetic attempt to dodge responsibility for his heinous crime.
A Grieving Family Speaks Out
Stephanie’s mother, Cathy Marie, gave a heartbreaking statement, revealing the torment she faces every day. “I lost consciousness when I heard; I haven’t stopped crying since,” she said. “She had her whole life ahead of her. I have nightmares every night.”
Cathy remembered her daughter as a “happy child” before meeting Flore. “After Stephanie met Jason, our family life became difficult. I don’t know exactly when they started living rough.”
Justice Served but Grief Remains
Detective Chief Inspector Sarah Leadbetter from Sussex Police praised witnesses and the community for helping bring Flore to justice. “This was a tragic, senseless act that stole a young mother’s life,” she said. “We hope today’s sentencing offers some closure to Stephanie’s family.”
