Car Breakdown Scam: Woman Targets Elderly for Cash
Nicola Collins, 38, has been caught running a sick scam in Rayleigh and Rochford this summer. Posing as a stranded motorist with a broken-down car, she demanded cash for petrol from passersby.
Victims Included Elderly and Vulnerable
Her marks were often elderly or vulnerable locals, who kindly handed over money, believing they were helping.
Police Crack Down After Multiple Reports
Following seven complaints, Rayleigh officers nabbed Collins on September 10. She faces seven counts of fraud by false representation and eight breaches of a criminal behaviour order (CBO).
At Basildon Magistrates’ Court on October 6, Collins pleaded guilty. She is set for sentencing at Southend Magistrates’ Court on November 11.
Investigating officer PC Leigh Stevenson said: “I am absolutely delighted that this individual has been caught and convicted. Targeting the vulnerable and elderly is despicable and Nicola Collins preyed on their charity and good nature. Our priority is to protect people and keep vulnerable people safe from crime and Collins’ conviction will no doubt do that.”
